On International Nurses Day, we celebrate the compassion, commitment and care that nurses bring to the lives of so many - and for regional manager Erin Glanville, that dedication is deeply personal.
Among the many meaningful moments in her career, one that shines brightest is helping a resident achieve what was once deemed impossible — walking again.
“He had been told he wouldn’t be able to walk anymore,” Erin recalls, “but with teamwork, careful planning and determination, we supported him to reach his goal”.
“He was able to go out and have a cup of coffee with his wife which is something most of us take for granted but for him was lifechanging.
“It was just one of those many moments that reminds you why you do this job.”
From the moment Erin first stepped into a hospital as a child, she knew nursing was her calling.
She found herself in a ward with three older women who couldn’t care for themselves, and instinctively began helping by feeding them, passing them the call button, or simply fetching a magazine.
“Very quickly, I knew that was the job for me.”
Now in aged care, no two days are the same, and that’s exactly what Erin loves most.
“There’s so much variety, and the relationships I’ve built with both my team and our residents are truly special,” she beamed.
Erin is passionate about supporting her staff and takes pride in the development opportunities Southern Cross Care (NSW & ACT) provides.
“The connection we have with our residents and the way we grow as professionals is what makes this place so special,” she said.
“This is their home, and we are like family. I was recently asked to deliver the eulogy for a resident who passed away, and having the opportunity to talk about not only her but her full and exciting life was an incredible honour I’ll never forget.”
Her message to fellow nurses on this International Nurses Day is filled with admiration:
“Keep being amazing. You are incredible and inspiring, and I’m so proud to be part of this profession.”
She’ll mark the day the only way she knows - with her team and residents, celebrating the joy and privilege of a career in caring.
