International Nurses Day: Meet Pauline Murtagh

Wearing Many Hats and Leading with Heart

This International Nurses Day, we celebrate the compassion, resilience and dedication of nurses everywhere—especially those who have committed their careers to improving the lives of older Australians. One of those nurses is Pauline Murtagh, Facility Manager at Southern Cross Care’s Campbell Residential Care.

With a rich background in nursing, Pauline found a new sense of purpose in aged care when the outcomes of the Royal Commission into Aged Care began to take shape.

“I saw a real opportunity to be part of that change and contributing to better outcomes for residents, families, and nurses. That was very exciting to me,” she said.

In her current role, Pauline wears many hats. A typical day sees her at the heart of operations: leading morning team briefings, guiding care decisions with her clinical expertise, and working closely with residents and their families to tailor individual care plans.

She manages everything from incident investigations and staff training to housekeeping and food services.

“It’s a role filled with variety, but most importantly, it’s about ensuring high-quality care and supporting our incredible team,” she said.

One moment that stands out in her career was caring for a retired teacher and farmer’s wife who had lived through some of Australia’s most remarkable times.

“She shared stories of life in rural Australia - from teaching in remote schools to the struggles of farming through floods and droughts.

“I felt honoured to care for her and learn from her lived experience.”

For Pauline, International Nurses Day is a time to reflect on the vital role nurses play in every community.

“It’s a special day to honour the dedication and hard work of nurses around the world - past and present,” she said.

“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude and love for all the nurses at Southern Cross Care. Our residents are lucky to have you.”

As we mark this important day, Pauline’s message is clear:

“Happy Nurses Day - and thank you for the care, kindness, and professionalism you bring to every shift.”
