International Nurses Day: Meet Sue Costigan

Healing with Heart

For Sue Costigan, being a nurse has never felt like just a job.

As a Home Care Nurse with Southern Cross Care (NSW & ACT), it’s the clients who have captured her heart—and kept her in the profession she celebrates today … International Nurses Day.

“They are so pleasant, friendly and full of gratitude. They really enjoy and look forward to seeing you. That’s what makes this role so special.”

Sue’s journey into nursing began while studying for her Certificate III in Residential Support. What started as a way to gain practical experience quickly became a passion.

“I stayed because of the clients. I wanted to keep coming back to see them, it’s that simple,” she says.

Her passion led her to complete a Diploma in Community Services and eventually, with the support of Southern Cross Care, a Master of Nursing.

“I couldn’t have done it without SCC,” she reflects. “They sponsored my studies and gave me the flexibility to continue working while studying. I’ll always be grateful for that.”

One of the moments that keeps Sue going came earlier this year, when she helped a client finally heal a wound that had persisted for over a year.

“She actually wished it a happy birthday,” Sue recalls with a laugh. “When it finally healed, we couldn’t believe it. We held a closing ceremony and celebrated with coffee and chocolates. While it mightn’t sound like much to some, it was a real achievement—for both of us.”

Working at Southern Cross Care has allowed Sue to thrive not only as a nurse but as a lifelong learner. She treasures the opportunity to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, solve clinical problems, and help clients live healthier lives in their own homes.

“Every day is a learning experience. You make a big difference with just a few little things.”

As we celebrate International Nurses Day, Sue has a message for her fellow nurses:

“Look after each other—and yourself. Nurses are notorious for putting their own health at the back of the list, but we can’t care for others unless we’re healthy too.”

This year, she’ll mark the day with her team over morning tea, reflecting on the challenges, joys, and deep sense of purpose that come with being a nurse.

Happy International Nurses Day!
