Cootamundra’s Australia Day Awards brought a moment of well-deserved recognition for someone who has quietly shaped the heart of the community for more than two decades.
Sister Kathy Hodge, a lifelong Sister of Mercy and much-loved volunteer at Cootamundra Residential Aged Care, was jointly awarded Citizen of the Year.
Fittingly, Sister Kathy also delivered the opening prayer at the Australia Day ceremony, setting a tone of gratitude and unity for the community she has served so faithfully.
Her nomination described her as “a true Cootamundra legend, humble, gracious and unwavering in her commitment to caring for others”.
Part of the fabric of daily life, she is on site at least three times a week, leading Chapel Services, volunteering with haircare, assisting with the fortnightly auxiliary bingo and café afternoons, and offering pastoral visits to residents who treasure her company.
She also serves as an office bearer on the auxiliary and plays an active role in fundraising efforts.
True to form, while thrilled to accept the award, she said it was her who was so thankful to be able to call the residents, staff and fellow volunteers her family.
“I had no idea I was even nominated until they announced my name, although I must admit I get so much more out of volunteering than I give,” she beamed.
“I’m so thankful to SCC for giving me the opportunity to be working in pastoral care at the home, the residents are like family, and their comfort and peace is at the heart of everything I do.
“I am so fortunate to be able to give back, particularly here, as I’m very passionate about rural communities.”
To celebrate her award, Residential Manager Aneta Piaskowska presented Sister Kathy with a beautiful floral arrangement, and residents gathered for tea and cakes.
And in true Sister Kathy style, she joined the singalong that followed, filling the room with the same warmth, joy, and gentle spirit she brings to every visit.
