International Volunteers Day

Tomorrow is International Volunteers Day, and Southern Cross Care would like to salute our army of volunteers for their daily giving of themselves for others.

And one of those very special people is Jan Galmes. For almost 30 years, Jan has volunteered at both the Greystanes and Merrylands Residential Care units, initially to be with her mother-in-law Anne when she moved into the Merrylands unit and shortly after to be with her own mum Dotty who entered the Greystanes facility after being diagnosed with dementia.

From sewing, to cooking, running craft workshops or just lending an ear to a lonely resident, Jan loves every minute of it and at 82, isn’t considering retiring anytime soon.

“I honestly have loved every minute of it and continue to do it because I find it so rewarding.
“We desperately need volunteers, and I would encourage everybody to really think about giving up just a little time for others in need.”
Greystanes Lifestyle Coordinator Ashna Varma said Jan is hardworking, creative and a ray of sunshine in their Greystanes facility.

“Jan’s wisdom, stories and ability to create meaningful experiences with residents has had a lasting impact,” she said.

“She has made a valuable contribution within our community and is a huge help to our team.”

Happy International Volunteers Day to all our hardworking volunteers for helping our residents and clients live life to the full.
